Studio Aphrodite

A new phase of life for a townhouse and its owner.

Completed 2019

The renovation of this townhouse was spurred by an owner who, several years after her husband's passing, wanted to feel a sense of renewal and joy. She began by asking Kate to reimagine her home of many years.

Originally very masculine and dark, with a palette of maroon, red, grey, and black, it was clear that this home could be modernised to reflect the charm and grace of its female owner.

Playing with textures and layers: Handprinted linen, velvet cushions, striated rug, silver and glass all work to create an intimate feeling.

The overall concept was for the interior to feel very feminine and elegant. Kate recognised the lovely natural light available yet insisted on some landscaping adjustments to enhance its presence, bringing the outside in. This light was also reflected further by the use of mirrors, metal, and brass. The intention was for the space to feel 'glowy'.

Soft greys and blues replaced the darker tones, with subtle patterns and textures such as sateen and velvet creating tonal differences. Practicality is always essential. In this instance, the owner has several pets, so fabrics must be easily cleaned and hardwearing. Another practical consideration was the selection of furniture. With a tall client, bespoke chairs were commissioned, designed to be taller and extra comfortable. Surrounding the chairs, the ottoman and stools can be used to place a drink or a book for a more mix-and-match approach.

Along with the client's extensive glassware and ceramic collection, specific artworks were purchased for the new interior, using Kate's visual booklet as a guide when buying new works.

Furniture was custom-made and specific antiques were sourced by Kate, such as the Singer sewing machine style table with the elegant marble top. A bust of Aphrodite was another piece sourced by Kate, and the client loves it for its beauty and symbolism.

A lovely story confirms the success of this space. The client hadn't been home for Christmas for seven years. Yet after the renovation she stayed at the house on Christmas day, feeling relaxed, happy and perfectly at home.
